A diverse and multidisciplinary design team undertook the revitalisation of a department store originally constructed in the 1970s. At that time, it was the largest shopping centre west of Toronto and Alberta’s first retail hub with two major anchor stores. The project entailed a radical transformation of the spaces and a comprehensive modernisation in terms of utilities and aesthetics. Spread across three commercial levels, the new multifunctional space is centred around a full-height atrium, a kind of contemporary amphitheatre flanked by galleries with commercial retail unit shells. Certain sections of the complex are designed with a flexible layout to accommodate various pop-up shops.
The space boasts a thoughtfully curated palette of materials inspired by the warm hues of honey-coloured wood. One of these materials is Refin’s Deck oak plank-effect porcelain stoneware collection, which fosters a warm and inviting ambience where visitors can relax, work and socialise. Chosen in the subtle tones of Flare and Bright, the porcelain slabs are bathed in soft natural light from the atrium and strategically placed sophisticated LED lighting. Seating, tables and steps are interspersed with green elements of vegetation, creating an atrium reminiscent of a large promenade with rest areas and inviting squares. A standout feature of this “architectural promenade” is the staircase that links the different levels, symbolising connectivity between floors and reinforcing the sense of continuity within the space. Considerable attention was also given to the surfaces in corridors and service areas, where porcelain stoneware was chosen for its durability, ease of cleaning and exceptional aesthetic appeal. The project’s high value combined with its extensive and iconic use of ceramic tiles earned it an Honourable Mention in the Commercial category of the Tile Competition 2023.
The 505Design practice provided comprehensive services encompassing architectural design, interior design and graphic design. The multidisciplinary team also received expert guidance from Ledcor, Smith and Andersen, RJC, Jensen, Hughes, Ilevel Design, Kasian, JK Lighting, Hauser and Greenscape Décor. Right from the conceptual stage, the designers adopted a sustainable approach, preserving the building’s horizontal and vertical structure while effecting a transformative renovation. Existing building management systems were refurbished and upgraded with newer, more advanced equipment, including water-efficient cooling towers and high-efficiency condensing boilers, pumps and heat exchangers.
In a short space of time, Southgate Centre has evolved into a sophisticated, appealing and contemporary shopping destination, boasting a unique blend of over 175 specialty fashion and lifestyle retailers.
