A Florence apartment gets a facelift

In Florence’s picturesque Gavinana neighbourhood, a 1970s apartment has undergone a dramatic transformation, becoming an example of elegance and functionality. This ambitious renovation project, led by architect Cristina Massimino, maximised natural light and took full advantage of the apartment’s privileged position with views on three sides and a large garden that shields it from the noise of the city.

A central element of the renovation involved removing the old partition walls and replacing them with elegant double-sided wardrobes. These not only serve as striking design elements but also redefine the interior spaces, enhancing the diffusion of light and creating a fluid, welcoming environment. This innovative solution transformed a previously dark and narrow corridor into a bright, open space, reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving energy efficiency.

The choice of Lingotti tiles in the elegant Foresta colour from Tonalite for both the floors and walls creates a seamless, cohesive effect throughout the apartment. The vertical layout of the wall tiles adds a sense of height and dynamism to the space, perfectly complementing the modern aesthetic. The colour scheme harmonises with the green hues of the surrounding garden, establishing a strong visual connection with the natural environment outside.

The use of sustainable materials and collaboration with local craftsmen were central to the project. The custom-made wardrobes are made of FSC-certified wood sourced from sustainably managed forests, reducing environmental impact while enhancing authenticity and honouring Florence’s tradition of artisanal craftsmanship.

“We employed various strategies to improve sustainability,” explains Cristina Massimino, the architect who led the project. “I redesigned the layout to maximise sunlight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and lowering energy consumption. We selected eco-friendly materials such as wood sourced from sustainably managed forests, low-impact laminate and high-quality ceramics. The choice of durable materials ensured the longevity of both the architectural and furnishing elements, reducing the need for premature replacement and minimising the environmental cost of producing new materials. Whenever possible, we collaborated with local manufacturers and craftsmen to reduce transport-related emissions. Throughout construction, we made every effort to minimise waste and recycle materials where feasible.”

The result is an apartment that perfectly caters to the needs of a modern family, combining comfort, aesthetics and sustainability. The new layout features a spacious, light-filled living area that combines a living room, kitchen and dining room, ideal for hosting friends and family. The east-facing sleeping area benefits from the tranquillity of the garden and the morning light, creating an oasis of peace in the heart of the city.
