Tile layer’s licence

Assoposa, Mapei and Certi.s are promoting the figure of the certified professional tile layer. Continuous education, greater professionalism and higher market value are just a few of the benefits of certification

The Italian tile layers’ association Assoposa has teamed up with Mapei, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of chemical products for the building industry, and certification agency Certi.s to promote tile layer certification. The resultant tile layer’s licence provides tile layers with official recognition of their skills and knowledge certified by an accredited certification body.

As part of this collaboration, Mapei Academy organises theoretical and practical simulations in preparation for the final examination, which serves to assess whether tile layers have acquired the skills, knowledge and expertise required to meet the standard UNI 11493.

Assoposa has the role of examiner and assesses the suitability of the candidates during the examination, while the licence is issued by Certi.s in its capacity as certification agency.

Assoposa Chairman Luca Berardo commented: “Ever since its inception, Assoposa has worked to fill the regulatory gap surrounding the professional role of the tile layer. Today, thanks to the UNI 11493 standard on ceramic tile installation and the training course organised by the association, culminating in the certification issued in collaboration with Mapei and Certi.s, the value of tile layers is finally recognised. Following the introduction of the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM), the tile layer’s licence allows points to be awarded when professional tile layers are adopted in the public administration sector.”

“Innovation is part of Mapei’s DNA and allows us to be competitive in the market,” adds Francesco Stronati, corporate product manager for the ceramic line and head of Mapei’s technical service department. “This is why we consider it essential for our hi-tech products to be installed by trained professionals who are able to use and apply them correctly to guarantee a safe and durable installation.”

“The Tile Layer’s Licence is now the most important qualification for a professional tile layer,” concludes Roberto Baldo, director of the Certi.s certification body. “In the European Year of Skills, certification is all the more valuable given the importance of training and skills development as key differentiators in the labour market. The Licence serves as a professional qualification and raises the tile layer’s level of professionalism thanks to continuous education and the exchange of skills and knowledge typical of the profession.”
