Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in the construction sector are drafted in accordance with the European standard EN 15804.

Confindustria Ceramica has teamed up with a number of Italian clay roof tile producers to work on a project entitled “LIFE HEROTILE – High Energy savings in building cooling by ROof TILEs”, which includes drawing up EPDs for the roof tiles developed as part of the project.

The two new types of clay tiles developed, known as Marseille and Portuguese, have an innovative design that ensures greater air permeability.

The new geometric shapes ensure greater air flow as well as lower energy consumption and emissions of climate-changing gases, as the undertile ventilation system allows for passive dissipation of solar radiation.

During the project, a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the new roof tiles was conducted, taking account of the impacts of the end-of-life stage and disposal of these tiles and thereby measuring the potential benefits of their recovery.

These innovative tiles are 70% reusable and only need a quick clean before they can be used directly on new buildings.

This high reuse potential helps to significantly improve the environmental performance of buildings and their ability to meet the new challenges of sustainable construction.
