Multigenerational design
Layer House, a private residence situated in the heart of tropical Singapore, epitomizes ADX Architects’ innovative approach to living space design. The challenge of the project was to create an interior that would accommodate the needs of three generations of the same family, respecting their individual habits and lifestyles while ensuring the maximum functionality and usability. The design cleverly balances private and communal areas, providing an ideal setting for both socialisation and individual spaces. With Layer House, ADX Architects demonstrates how thoughtful design can combine style with the practical demands of a multigenerational household.
The entrance to the house is via a cantilevered porch with an elegant natural wood ceiling. While open to the interior, it is subtly shielded by an external curtain to maintain privacy. The ground floor is centred around the kitchen, living room and dining room, all bathed in the abundant natural light that enters through glass walls on two sides of the building. These areas stand out for their sober, rational design and connect seamlessly to the outdoor spaces to make the most of the pleasant tropical climate. An airy staircase, suspended above a small water pool, leads to the second floor where there are four bedrooms, each tailored to the specific needs of each family member. The staircase continues to the third and final level, which houses a lounge area with a terrace that overlooks the internal garden. This space serves as a communal meeting place for the entire family.
One of the standout materials used in Layer House is Florim Ceramiche’s porcelain stoneware, which significantly enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of the residence. The Stones & More 2.0 Stone Calacatta glossy slabs, each measuring 120×120 cm, are used in the living room, dining room and open-plan kitchen, infusing the areas with refined elegance and mimicking the natural beauty of Calacatta marble. The luxurious finish and large format of the slabs, installed with minimal joints, not only enhance the sense of space but also help to create a more welcoming and cohesive atmosphere in these communal spaces. The same porcelain stoneware tiles are used in the pool area, where their reflectivity harmonises beautifully with the shimmering water, creating a serene and tranquil ambience. This design choice not only unifies the aesthetics of the interior and exterior but also brings a touch of sophistication to this contemplative space. In the first bathroom, the floors and walls are tiled with a combination of Statuario Lucido and Statuario Soft surfaces in a 120×280 cm size from the I Classici collection. The glossy finish of Statuario Lucido gives the space a bright and clean appearance, while the soft finish provides an expressive contrast, both contributing to a classic and timeless design. Finally, the fourth bathroom makes innovative use of Statuario in the Open Book Lucido A+B decorative tile in a 320×320 cm size, an eye-catching design that adds an artistic touch to the shower and wall areas.
